Redesigning a website that already works a bit

Your current site gets some visitors and some enquiries. A redesign should keep those, and the way to do that is boring, careful work on every old address.

Where redesigns go wrong

The usual way a new site loses traffic is simple: the old page addresses stop working. Google and anyone who bookmarked or linked to them hit an error page, and the rankings those pages had built up go with them.

The second is cutting content that was quietly bringing people in. A page that looks dull to you might be the one that ranks for the search your best customers make.

How we handle it

  • List every address. We crawl the current site and pull its pages from Google Search Console, so nothing is missed.
  • Keep what earns its place. Pages with traffic or links keep their content and, where it makes sense, their address.
  • Redirect each old page to its closest new one. Not everything to the home page, which Google treats much like a missing page.
  • Build on a private preview. You review the new site at a test address that search engines are told to ignore.
  • Launch and watch. We submit the new sitemap and check Search Console for broken links and dropped pages in the weeks after launch.

What it costs

A redesign is priced like a new build, because the design and code are new. "A site that sells" from $11,000 includes moving your old content across with a redirect map. On "A clear presence", from $6,000, the move is added when you need it.

If you are moving off WordPress, Wix or Squarespace, read WordPress or Next.js first: staying where you are is sometimes the right answer.

Questions people ask us

Will my rankings drop after a redesign?

Some movement for a few weeks is normal while Google recrawls the site. With every old address redirected and the content that ranks kept, most sites settle back where they were or better. Without redirects, losses are common and slow to recover.

Can I keep my domain and email?

Yes. The domain stays yours and we only change the records that point the website at the new host. Email keeps running where it is.

Do you need access to my current site?

Access to Google Search Console and your domain settings helps most. We can crawl the public site without any logins.
